Electricity Supply Monitoring Initiative (ESMI) was Prayas (Energy Group)'s initiative monitoring the electricity supply at about 400 locations in India. The minute-by minute voltage and interruptions data recorded at ESMI locations is aimed at providing evidence-based feedback about the quality of supply to all stakeholders in the electricity sector, including distribution companies, regulatory commissions, government agencies, civil society organisations, and consumer groups. We hope that this will lead to improvement in the quality of supply and fairness in distribution of electricity in India.
ESMI was operational at scale primarily from 2015-2018, though we continued to collect data at some locations until 2023. For more information about the initiative, visit page. This portal is maintained as a Proof of Concept, where a subset of the data recorded at a few locations is available in the form of analysis reports, and dashboards. The entire data set has been available on the harvard dataverse for research purposes.
